American in Spirit and Character

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / 04/01/2025

A New Chapter for a Proud City: The French Quarter Renamed the American Quarter

We are proud to announce a bold new chapter for the great state of Louisiana and the iconic city of New Orleans. Beginning today, by executive order of Governor Jeff Landry, the historic district formerly known as the French Quarter will officially be recognized as the American Quarter.

For too long, one of our nation’s most cherished and beloved destinations has carried a name that does not reflect its true character. Though its streets echo with a colonial past, the heart and soul of this district are unmistakably American. It is a place shaped not only by its architecture, but by the enduring spirit of liberty, resilience, and unity that defines the United States of America.

From jazz music to jambalaya, from parades to perseverance through hardship, the American Quarter is a living symbol of what it means to be American. The name change honors the generations of patriots, entrepreneurs, veterans, artists, and everyday citizens who have made this neighborhood a beacon of American culture and creativity.

The American Quarter is more than a name. It is a statement of pride. It is a tribute to the values that unite us as a people—freedom, diversity, and progress—and a reaffirmation that this district belongs not just to history, but to the future of a strong, united America.

Under Governor Landry’s leadership, this renaming is not simply cosmetic—it is deeply symbolic. It reclaims the Quarter as a proud American landmark, ensuring that when visitors from across the country and the world walk its storied streets, they know they are standing in a place that reflects the full vibrancy of American life.

As part of this initiative, all French and Spanish street names in the district will be updated with American-centric alternatives in the coming months. The public is encouraged to participate in this patriotic endeavor by submitting street name suggestions beginning today at AmericanQuarter.us.

New naming guidelines will also be distributed to all departments within City Hall and submitted to the Domestic Names Committee of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, which oversees the standardization of names on federal maps and publications. These updates will ensure consistent national recognition of the American Quarter across all official records and signage.

When you visit the great state of Louisiana and the dynamic city of New Orleans, we look forward to welcoming you to the American Quarter—a destination that is not only rich in culture but fully American in spirit.

We thank Governor Jeff Landry for his unwavering commitment to patriotism and his visionary leadership in making this renaming a reality.
